Prof. Dr. Steffen Burkhardt
Steffen Burkhardt researches and teaches as professor of media and culture theory, media research and literacy at HAW Hamburg's Faculty of Design, Media & Information with an emphasis on globalization and public sphere, political communication, journalism and social media. He is the director of the IMC – International Media Center, Germany's leading academic exchange platform for international journalism.
Burkhardt studied as a fellow of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation) at the University of Hamburg. His doctoral thesis "Media Scandals: On the Moralistic Explosive Force of Public Discourses" was recognized by the magazine Politik und Kommunication (Politics and Communication) as a standard work of political communication. In it, he analyzed the interrelationship of scandals and processes of social transformation.
Between 2005 and 2010, Burkhardt oversaw the expansion of the master's degree course in journalism at the University of Hamburg, which has been accredited by the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) since 2008 and the national accreditation agency ACQUIN since 2009. In 2006, he established a fellowship program for young journalists as well as the Nachwuchsinitiative für Qualitätsjournalismus (National Youth Initiative for Quality Journalism). His textbook Praktischer Journalismus (Practical Journalism) appeared in 2009. It was the first German publication to be adopted by the EJTA training system.
In 2007, Burkhardt ushered the journalism exchange program China-Germany Media Ambassadors into being – the first Chinese-German fellowship program for media experts. Financed by the Robert Bosch Foundation, it is now patronized by the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs. In 2009, he was able to secure the Tsinghua International Center for Communication Studies in Peking as a cooperating partner in the program.
In 2010, he was appointed founding director of the International Media Center (IMC). Since 2010 he has developed additional projects in collaboration with leading university-based teaching and research institutions in countries outside Europe, which were incorporated into the IMC on behalf of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg: the American-German Media Program, the African-German Media Program, the Asian-German Media Program, and the Russian-German Media Program.
Burkhardt is a founding member of the Global Communication Association (chair: Shanghai) and is active in numerous international organizations. Additionally, he is a member of independent think tanks and a fellow of the American Council on Germany (chair: New York). He was appointed to the transatlantic Young Leaders Study Group on the Future of Europe in 2009 and to the European "40 under 40" group in 2012.
He is currently working on a history of social media – and its significance for European privacy concepts.
