German-Asian Media Program

In its German-Asian Media Program the International Media Center (IMC) concentrates on projects with China and India. In the areas of research, teaching and knowledge-sharing it contributes to international understanding.

China’s and India's significance as politico-economic players and as cultural nations are increasing. To strengthen and institutionalize its friendship with Asian Tiger states the IMC has struck cooperations with the Thomson Reuters Global Journalism Institute (GJI) of Tsinghua University in Peking and the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) in Chennai. Both institutions are also the cooperation partner in the journalism exchange program “Media Ambassadors China – Germany” and “Media Ambassadors India – Germany”.

The Media Ambassadors programs are realized in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Foundation. They aim to arouse journalists’ interest for the international understanding between Asia and Germany. Every year, up to 32 scholarships are awarded to Chinese, Indian and German journalists, who get trained in the domestic and media studies of the host country and visit newsrooms in a "job shadowing" stay at leading media enterprises.

In addition to a better understanding through shared experiences and a broader knowledge about foreign relations, the core goal of the program is the improvement of the images of the countries’ respective media. The IMC staff continually compares notes with colleagues in Asia. This exchange of information includes bilateral discussions as well as lectures at Asian symposia.
